Traffic school will help keep your auto insurance costs lower if you receive a traffic ticket.

Every licensed California Driver must have auto insurance to drive a vehicle in California. Proof of insurance must be provided to the California DMV when you obtain your drivers license (not your learners permit).

Proof of auto insurance must also be provided to DMV when you register or renew the license on a vehicle you own.

An essay by one of our students:

Driver Ed Online

Getting a driver’s license may not be as difficult as you may think. If you’re fifteen, then you’re ready to begin the process. The first thing you ought to do is familiarize yourself with the steps involved in acquiring the license. Find the location of your local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), as they will be able to provide you with the detailed legal information and the policies involved. The DMV also administers the two exams that you will need to pass. If you are successful, they will grant you your very own driver’s license. The two tests that the DMV requires you take are the permit test and the behind-the-wheel driving test. The permit test is a written multiple-choice examination that evaluates your basic knowledge of how to drive; you’ll have to know the rules of the road and the theoretical mechanisms of driving. The second test is a real life behind-the-wheel test with an examiner. They will make sure that you qualify as a safe driver.

Driver’s Education

To prepare yourself for the permit test, you’ll need to take a driver’s education class. If you aren’t 18 years old, this is a mandatory test required to get your permit. There are a variety of mechanisms that will allow you to fulfill this requirement. The first is to take the class at your school. Traditionally, schools have offered this course as a free class, where you can even get school credit. Recently private companies have also been administering the test, and it is now even available online. Taking the course online provides the advantage of avoiding the long class hours, allowing you to take control of your own work pace. Once you have a grasp of what the road signs mean and how you ought to conduct yourself on the road, schedule an appointment with the DMV to take the permit test.

The Provisional License and Driver’s Training

Once you pass the permit test, you will be issued a provisional license, also known as the driver’s permit. This will allow you to begin training behind the wheel. You will need at least 50 hours of training, 10 of which ought to be nighttime driving before you take the road test. The DMV also mandates that you take at least 6 hours of professional training, which is offered by many local private companies. The rest of the training ought to be done by your parents – be sure to convince them to let you drive everywhere you can! This training is not only valuable experience for passing the test, but also for the rest of your life.

The DMV Driver’s Test

Once you are ready, you can then schedule an appointment to take the driver’s test with the DMV. An examiner will sit in the passenger seat and direct you to drive in your local area. Don’t be too nervous, but don’t forget to watch your speed – if you drive even one mile over the speed limit, you will not pass the exam. If you obey all the rules, you will pass and get your driver’s license.

The California Driver’s License

Keep in mind that there are various restrictions on the driver’s license. The new California law (as of 2006) has extended the restriction period to one year on your license. For one year, you cannot drive after 11:00 pm, and you cannot transport any minors if you do not have a licensed adult on the car with you. Other than that, be sure to drive safe. Many teenagers become overconfident and begin to speed, drink, and engage in a multitude of unsafe activities. Don’t wait to correct your own behavior after you get a ticket or are sent to traffic school. One mistake and it could cost you your life.
